Description
Buddleja globosa | Orange-ball Butterfly Bush
Orange-ball Butterfly Bush is also commonly known as Orange Ball Tree, Chilean Orange Ball Tree, Orange Butterfly Bush, and Matico, is a deciduous or semi-evergreen open-formed shrub or small tree native to the Andes of Chile, Peru, and Argentina, and can grow quickly to a mature height of 10- 15 ft and a width of 8-12 ft. It bears alternate, simple leaves, which are lanceolate in shape and up to 7 inches long. The leaves display a rugose texture on their upper sides and are fuzzy on the lower surfaces. As it’s common name suggests, Orange Ball Butterfly Bush is known for it’s striking orange, ball-like flower clusters that appear in June. Each sphere is composed of tiny, tubular, fragrant flowers that attract abundant bumble bees and other pollinators.
Orange Ball Buddleja flowers on previous season’s wood, so prune after flowering. If you prune too late you will cut off next years flowering tips.
Grows best in full sun in well-drained soil. Plants do not like overly wet soil in the winter.
Buddleja globosa is one of the parents that created the highly popular and unique Weyeriana Butterfly Bush types called ‘Golden Glow’ & ‘Honeycomb’.
