Buddleja weyeriana | Weyeriana Butterfly Bush ‘Moonlight’ (seedlings)
Weyeriana Butterfly Bush, also known as Yellow-flowered Butterfly Bush, Weyers Butterfly Bush, and Golden Butterfly Bush, is easily one of the most rare and most beautiful Buddleja varieties on the market. ‘Moonlight’ is the sister of ‘Golden Glow’, one of the original plants from Major William Van De Weyers original F2 cross of B. Davidii ‘Magnifica’ x B. globosa ‘Orange Ball’ from 1920! This pairing has never been successfully recreated. Any new cultivars have come about via sports, rather than seedlings.
Please note that these are seedling grown Buddleja ‘Moonlight’ plants, meaning we harvested seeds from our ‘Moonlight’ plant, germinated them, and grew them out. The majority of the plants are a very rare and have a unique color- a beautiful periwinkle lavender-blue, while some are more on the pinkish side. The flowers shapes are mostly intermediate in appearance, resembling the B. davidii form as well as the spherical B. globosa qualities as well. The fragrance is honey-scented and attracts a myriad of pollinators. Honeybees and Bumblebees are particularly fond of the flowers. ‘Moonlight’ seedlings are more leggy and open structured than other B. weyeriana varieties, being more akin to a B. davidii in stature. Once established, a plant can grow 8 ft tall and 6 ft wide in one season, with an upright-arching to spreading habit. If not pruned back each year, it can grow taller. However, for the best shape, look, and performance, we always recommend a hard-prune down to your knees in April.
Plants grow best in full sun in well drained soils. Drought tolerant, but will drink plenty of water during the hottest months if watered regularly.
These plants are sterile and do NOT produce seed.
