Philodendron hybrid | Philodendron ‘Birkin’
Philodendron ‘Birkin’, sometimes also called ‘White Wave’ or ‘Birkin White Wave’, is a relatively new self-supporting philodendron variety with large, dark green leaves that are streaked in creamy-white, making each leaf and plant entirely unique. The more light, the brighter the leaf pattern. However, the variegation is known to be unstable at times, so it could partially or fully revert. And it can always revert back to white stripes again in maturity too. ‘Birkin’ is a spontaneous mutation of ‘Rojo Congo’/’Red Congo’, which was created in Florida. Its parents are Philodendron ‘Imperial Red’ (female) x Philodendron ‘Tatei’ (male). To take it even further, Philodendron ‘Imperial Red’ was patented in Belgium in 1982 after a greenish-maroon spontaneous mutation with unknown parents was discovered in a nursery in Florida.
It’s a relatively slow-growing tropical houseplant that makes a great desktop or table-side plant when small. As it matures, it can reach 3 feet tall and wide where it becomes better suited as an good ol’ fashioned houseplant. Widely loved for its low maintenance and ease of care.
