Columbine, also known as ‘Granny’s Bonnet’ is an all time favorite garden and wildflower. This ‘Starburst Mix’ is the result of open pollinated Columbine plants in our garden, making this seed mix exclusive to A Thousand Flowers! Includes white, purple, pink, dark-red and violet-blue colored double and single blooms.<\/p>\n
This hardy, herbaceous perennial is easy to grow from seed and\u00a0will tolerate a large range of soil and sun types, so will do well in full sun as well as some shade. However, no columbines like to stay wet for a long period of time\u2014 it’s a sure way to rot your plants. Seeds may require cold-stratification before sowing, or direct-sow outdoors in autumn. Keep in mind that columbines are cool-season perennials and are not very fond of hot and humid summers. If you’re growing columbine in a garden setting with hot and humid summers, give them afternoon shade. Some species go dormant in the summer and will grow foliage back in the fall.<\/p>\n
Young leaves are clover-like in shape. The plants will bloom the second year in late spring to early summer. They have distinctive spurs on their nodding heads, and their centers take on a honeycomb look.<\/p>\n
Drought tolerant and tough as nails. Reseeds freely.\u00a0Deer and rabbit resistant. Flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies.<\/p>\n
