(A caudex is a fat, stout stem or root which sits above ground.) The main stem has swollen, greyish-green joints (stem tubers or caudex-like stems) from which long, fast growing vines grow and spread for several feet over and around pots. When grown outdoors, at the end of Autumn, the annual vines die back leaving only the massive caudex. Any swollen nodes which are in or near the soil will root and form a new plant. The vines also produce long tendrils which enable this plant to attach to other vegetation and climb as it grows.

Cissus tuberosa is an incredibly fast growing plant. In its natural habitat in Mexico, Nicaragua, and Guatemala, it grows on rocky outcrops where its heavily-branched, scrambling vines may cover rocks and nearby vegetation. In cultivation, the vines can be trained to grow upwards on a trellis or similar support, and should eventually produce a more upright caudex. The flowers are insignificant and form in the spring.

Doesn’t require frequent watering, since they keep a store in their caudex. If the soil is kept too wet, the roots could rot. They do drink quite a bit, but err on the dry side. The plant will go dormant when temps drop and they will need even less water.

Makes a fantastic specimen plant for Bonsai. The Cissus tuberosa plants we have available for sale are well rooted with a small caudex starting to form on the bottom of the stalk.

Type: Perennial

Outdoor light exposure: Full sun to part shade

Indoor light exposure: Bright, indirect light

Mature height: 6-15 ft

Mature width: 2-6 ft

Hardiness zones outdoors: 9-12

The plant you will receive will be one of these plants or a similar one.

Please note: We ship plants orders out on Mondays and Tuesdays only.

[4616

post-33012","product","type-product","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","product_cat-plant-starts","product_shipping_class-rooted-plant-quart","first","outofstock","taxable","shipping-taxable","purchasable","product-type-variable","add-to-wishlist-before_image
["GET
