‘Golden Butterfly’ Kite Orchid, also called Flag Orchid, Comet Orchid, or Tail Orchid, is a type of miniature or compact orchid with unique, triangular, tailed, kite-looking flowers of\u00a0 bright yellow.<\/p>\n

Masdevallia orchids prefer cool, moist, and shaded environments around 55-60F nights and 70-75F days and should be watered frequently as they don’t have pseudobulbs for water storage and tend to dry out fairly quickly, so be sure to not let your ‘Golden Butterfly’ dry out completely while also not over-watering it.<\/p>\n

‘Golden Butterfly’ Kite Orchid needs low to medium light intensity in order to thrive. If it receives too much light, it can cause the leaves to turn yellow. If it does not get enough light the leaves can turn a deep green color and will become elongated. The best light to grow a Masdevallia orchid indoors is on a shaded windowsill out of direct sunlight. If you only have a brightly lit windowsill, it may be better to place your Masdevallia in the middle of a room out of direct bright light.<\/p>\n

Humidity levels must be kept high. The higher the temperature is the higher the humidity should be. 60-80% humidity is recommended.<\/p>\n

Aloe ‘Blizzard’ is a light pigmented dwarf succulent that forms rosettes of upright, pale green leaves covered with white markings, giving it an almost white appearance. The rosettes can grow up to 8 inches tall and 6 inches across. The coral-orange bell-shaped flowers hang from a tall stalk and being polycarpic will flower multiple times, usually from late winter into spring.<\/p>\n

Agave chrysantha | <\/em>Golden-flowered Agave<\/p>\n

Golden-flowered Agave, also commonly called Golden-flower Century Plant, is an endemic perennial subshrub native only to central and southern Arizona at 3,000 to 7,000 feet. It is very similar in appearance to Palmers Agave which it has been known to hybridize with (Agave palmeri). It is commonly seen in its natural habitat which includes rocky hillsides and sandy to gravelly soils in desert scrub, grasslands, and juniper and oak woodland landscapes.<\/p>\n

The species has sharp spines on the margins of long and stiff, glaucous-green leaves arranged in a rosette, but is known for and distinguished by its giant golden-yellow to orange flower spikes that tower to an astonishing 21 feet in height from June to August. Flowers only once before dying where it will then regrow from basal offsets.<\/p>\n

Golden-flowered Agave can survive with little or no summer water once established and must have excellent drainage, such as a gravelly or granite-based soil because w<\/span>et and cold soil can be more fatal to it than low temperatures alone. Since it grows at <\/span>higher elevations it’s accustomed to winter frosts.<\/span><\/p>\n

This species attracts insects including bees, as well as birds and bats.<\/p>\n

Rhyncholaeliocattleya <\/em>hybrid | <\/em>Cattleya Pink Empress Orchid ‘Ju Sen’<\/p>\n

Cattleya Orchid, also known as Corsage Orchid, and the Queen of Orchids, is an \u00a0intergeneric hybrid created by crossing Rhyncholaelia<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Cattleya.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

This ‘Ju Sen’ Pink Empress Orchid is at least 4 years old and is rooted to and sold on a wood plank. This stunner is characterized by its large (15-20 cm), magenta-pink fragrant flowers with a distinctively large, golded ruffled lip that appears to glow.<\/p>\n

It requires bright, indirect light and perhaps supplemental light, warm days (70\u201385\u00b0F) with cooler nights (55\u201365\u00b0F) and humidity ranging from 40\u201370%. A high-drainage, bark-based media and a “soak and dry” watering cycle is required, ensuring they dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot.<\/p>\n

Orchids are epiphytic and grow on branches and trunks of trees in the wild. While in cultivation, they are best grown in sphagnum moss or bark with plant fibers, at pH 6.5 \u2013 7.5. (although this one is growing on a piece of wood.) Keep out of direct sunlight or the leaves will get scorched.<\/p>\n
