Hibiscus rosa-sinensis | <\/em>Tropical Hibiscus ‘Simple Pleasures’<\/p>\n

Tropical Hibiscus, also known as Hawaiian Hibiscus, Garden Hibiscus, Chinese Hibiscus, China Rose, Coopers Hibiscus, Fencing Flower, Shoe Flower, and Shoeblack Plant, is a large tropical shrub in the Mallow family known for its bold, large, funnel-shaped flowers with showy centers.<\/p>\n

Tropical Hibiscus is considered to be part of the ‘Lilibiscus’ section of the genus which as of late has been making a comeback. Hibiscus rosa-sinensis<\/em> cultivars are the result of hybridization of ancient and modern Hibiscus varieties from a number of species\u2015 the majority being from the Mascarene Islands in the Indian Ocean and the Hawaiian Islands in the Pacific. This complex hybrid group was derived from most, if not all of the following species: Hibiscus genevii, Hibiscus kokio, Hibiscus liliiflorus, Hibiscus schizopetalus, Hibiscus arnottianus, Hibiscus fragilis, Hibiscus boryanus, Hibiscus denisonii, and Hibiscus storckii<\/em>. Given its genetic history, it is not surprising that Hibiscus rosa-sinensis<\/em> exhibits a wide array of traits and a dazzling variety of forms and flower colors.<\/p>\n

The ‘Simple Pleasures’ variety, released in 2004, is known for its abundant branches and flowers buds that open up into stunning multicolored blooms of hot pink with bright yellow edges and a deep maroon center that can be as large as 8-10 inches in diameter, even on small plants! She inherited its bushy form from her famous parent, ‘High Voltage’. It’s a strong growing variety that can reach 6 ft or more if planted in the ground, but can also become an excellent 3 ft bush as a potted plant. Extremely easy to grow and blooms prolifically. Highly recommended for collectors and tropical flower aficionados!<\/p>\n

Does best planted in a location with full sun to part shade and in rich, moist soil with good drainage. Appreciates high humidity and protection from wind. Does not tolerate frost.\u00a0Plant in your flower or butterfly garden or in a naturalized area. Plant multiples for use as a small screen or hedge, or plant singularly as an accent plant. Its large flowers\u00a0 are an attractant for specialized bees and pollinators. Resistant to browsing by deer.<\/p>\n
