Hibiscus rosa-sinensis\u00a0 | <\/em>Tropical Hibiscus ‘Tres Bon’<\/p>\n

Tropical Hibiscus, also known as Hawaiian Hibiscus, Garden Hibiscus, Chinese Hibiscus, China Rose, Fencing Flower, Shoe Flower, and Shoeblack Plant, is a large tropical shrub in the Mallow family known for its bold, large, funnel-shaped flowers with showy centers.<\/p>\n

Tropical Hibiscus is considered to be part of the ‘Lilibiscus’ section of the genus which as of late has been making a comeback. Hibiscus rosa-sinensis<\/em> cultivars are the result of hybridization of ancient and modern Hibiscus varieties from a number of species\u2015 the majority being from the Mascarene Islands in the Indian Ocean and the Hawaiian Islands in the Pacific. This complex hybrid group was derived from most, if not all of the following species: Hibiscus genevii, Hibiscus kokio, Hibiscus liliiflorus, Hibiscus schizopetalus, Hibiscus arnottianus, Hibiscus fragilis, Hibiscus boryanus, Hibiscus denisonii, and Hibiscus storckii<\/em>. Given its genetic history, it is not surprising that Hibiscus rosa-sinensis<\/em> exhibits a wide array of traits and a dazzling variety of forms and flower colors.<\/p>\n

‘Tres Bon’ Hibiscus variety which is often sold as ‘C’est Bon’, is a hybrid cross between ‘Patrick’ x ‘Harvest Moon’. It’s prized for its highly ornamental, bi-colored 5″ ruffled pink blossoms with contrasting blotchy bands of white, plus a bright yellow center. This is a somewhat more compact and freely branching variety that’s well suited for container culture. Easy to grow and blooms prolifically. Highly recommended for collectors and tropical flower aficionados!<\/p>\n

Thrives in rich, moist soil with good drainage and full sun (6+ hours) for maximum blooming. However, in hot and dry climates or regions with extreme summer sun, it will benefit from part shade or filtered afternoon light to prevent leaf scorch. Appreciates high humidity and protection from wind. Does NOT tolerate frost. Plant in your flower or butterfly garden or in a naturalized area. Plant multiples for use as a small screen or hedge, or plant singularly as an accent plant. Its large flowers are an attractant for specialized bees and pollinators.       ROOTING INSTRUCTIONS:<\/p>\n

      How to prepare cuttings to root via rooting cubes inside a humidity dome.<\/b><\/p>\n

      1. Upon arrival, give cuttings a new fresh cut on the bottom of the stem. Then set in a cup of water for a minimum of 15 minutes.<\/li>\n
      2. After soaking, gently cut or scrape small marks into the bottom portion of the plant stem (\u00bd inch) with scissors or a razor blade.<\/li>\n
      3. Dip the scarred end of the stem into rooting gel or rooting powder (gel is superior). This can be done without rooting gel, but results are not as good.<\/li>\n
      4. Insert the plant stem into a rooting cube (Oasis cubes, grow plugs, soil-cubes, rock-wool cubes, etc) and place into a nursery tray with a humidity dome over the top. One cutting per cube.\u00a0Custom individual humidity domes can be made using plastic cups and\/or plastic cling wrap.<\/li>\n
      5. After the first 3-5 days, the humidity dome should be opened up or set ajar to slowly allow more air in as the plants start to root. At this point, the cubes should be allowed to become mostly dry before adding any more water.<\/li>\n
      6. Once 2-3 roots grow out of the bottom of the root-cube, the plant can be transplanted into soil.<\/li>\n

        Beijing Mock Orange, also known as Peking Mock Orange is an attractive, upright, deciduous shrub native to the mountain slopes of Northern and Western China and Korea that’s characterized by and cultivated for its fragrant scent of and creamy-white four-petaled flowers that bloom in May and June and resemble orange blossoms. The scent is often described as sweet, delicate, and slightly citrusy <\/span>perfume, making it ideal for those who prefer subtle floral aromas.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Philadelphus pikensis <\/em>is highly valued as a specimen plant or used in hedges or screen rows due to its dense, upright growth habit.<\/p>\n

        Mock Oranges are generally not susceptible to any serious pests or diseases, they do well with little attention, and they’re easy to transplant, too. Pruning should only be done immediately after the bloom cycle finishes. Since they bloom on “old wood” (growth from the previous year), trimming in late summer or fall could cut away next year’s flower buds.         Buddleja albiflora | <\/em>Alibiflora Butterfly Bush<\/p>\n

        Buddleja albiflora<\/em> is a deciduous shrub from the mountains of central China where it grows on steep slopes at altitudes of 3,000 – 6,000 ft. Can be found growing in open woodlands, forest edges and on stream banks. Mature plants can grow to a height of 12 ft in the wild, but often stay shorter in cultivation. The leaves are narrow, toothed and dark-green, and are covered underneath with a fine silvery-grey felt. Its scientific name is a misnomer (‘white flower’) because the sweetly fragrant flowers are a pale-lilac in color with pale-orange centers.<\/p>\n

        Buddleja albiflora<\/em> is strinkingly similar in appearance to Buddleja davidii<\/em>, but has rounded dark red stems as opposed to four-angled square green stems, and it flowers 3-4 weeks earlier than B davidii<\/em>. Our seeds were sourced from their native region in China and were then grown out and harvested at 48 longitude in Zone 8.<\/p>\n

        Buddleja macrostachya<\/em>\u00a0|\u00a0<\/em>Long-spike Butterfly Bush (type 2 form- upright flowers that bloom Autumn – late winter)<\/p>\n

        Long-spike Butterfly Bush, also known as Long-spiked Butterfly Bush, is a somewhat exotic alternative to the more common Buddleja davidii<\/em> species, possessing a similar flower appearance, but on a larger and more sturdy frame\u00a0 and that blooms in either autumn or late winter. It’s native to East Himalayas to South Central China and North Indo-China, where it grows as a large woody shrub to a small tree (20 ft) in forest clearings, usually found at altitudes greater than 3,000 ft. Buddleja macrostachya<\/em> has evolved at altitude, so is suited for temperate mountainous habitats.<\/p>\n

        This species is highly variable in structure, flower color, hardiness, and bloom period. Our ‘type 2’ form was wild-sourced from China\u00a0 which produces upright plants with huge, deep-green, leathery leaves, squarish, winged branches, and large, pink, violet-mauve, or deep purple upright flowers with bright eyes that bloom in late-summer or autumn, or sometimes in late-winter or early-spring (this particular plant for sale has lavender colored flowers).<\/p>\n

        Full sun is best, but plants may prefer a little shade in the hottest part of the season. Humus-rich, moisture retentive soil in summer and well-drained soil in the winter is ideal. Sheltering plants from the harshest winds and avoiding planting in frost pockets should ensure the plants make it through winters. Adding a good layer of winter mulch on top of the roots helps protect the soil from freezing solid. Fully root hardy to zone 8 (10 degrees F) while some years it’s not. If plants die to the ground they will shoot up to 8-9 ft by the next year.<\/p>\n

              Philadelphus maculatus (<\/em>formerly microphyllus var. madrensis)<\/em> | Desert Mountain Mock Orange<\/p>\n

              Desert Mountain Mock Orange, also known as Madrean Mock Orange and Sierra Madre Mock Orange, is a medium-sized, deciduous, drought-tolerant, flowering shrub native to the dry, mountainous regions of the southwestern United States and Mexico, named after the Sierra Madre Mountains from which it was originally found by Berthold Carl Seemann in 1846.<\/p>\n

              It bears small, pendulous, highly fragrant white flowers with deep red centers and purple calyces with an exceedingly wonderful aroma of grape candy\/grape kool-aid which carries in the air. Many would agree that it’s the most aromatic of any Mock Orange species, so plant it where the branches can arch gracefully and the scented flowers can be appreciated. We planted ours by the front door at both of our past two homes. Blooms from late May into June. Prune after flowering or cut back to the ground if overgrown.<\/p>\n

              While this shrub is adaptable to a range of conditions including drought, it prefers sunny locations and does not tolerate poor drainage.<\/p>\n

              Buddleja\/Buddleia <\/em>hybrid (B. marrubiifolia x B. cordata) <\/em>| ‘Peter‘ <\/em>Butterfly Bush<\/p>\n

              ‘Peter’ is a rare and unusual Butterfly Bush cross bred by hybridizer Peter Podaras. It was introduced to the market around 2010 and consists of two mostly unknown Butterfly Bushes- the orange-flowered dessert shrub B. marrubiifolia<\/em> and the pale yellow-flowered B. Cordata<\/em>. The leaves and flowers look like a perfect pairing from both parents with fuzzy ovate leaves and flowers that are pale yellow and globose.<\/p>\n

              ‘Peter’ does best when planted in full sun with well-draining soil. It does not like heavy soils or to be over-watered, especially when young, otherwise it’s an easy to grow and nice hardy plant down to zone 7. Drought tolerant once established. For the best shape, look, and performance, we always recommend pruning after it flowers.<\/p>\n

              \u2018Longstock Silver’ Butterfly Bush, made in 2000 by Peter Moore, is a hardy, deciduous small to medium-sized shrub. The leaves are soft and felted, like B. crispa <\/em>or B. agathosma,<\/em> and the flowers are lilac with a pale eye (also like B. crispa)<\/em> in cylindrical panicles from mid-summer into October.                   2. After soaking, gently cut or scrape small marks into the bottom portion of the plant stem (\u00bd inch) with scissors or a razor blade.<\/li>\n
                  3. Dip the scarred end of the stem into rooting gel or rooting powder (gel is superior). This can be done without rooting gel, but results are not as good.<\/li>\n

                    B. crispa x B. lindleyana | <\/em>Butterfly Bush ‘Pride of Longstock’<\/p>\n

                    Buddleja Pride of Longstock, also known as \u2018Longstock’s Pride\u2019, was bred in England in 1999 by Peter Moore, and is a beautiful and unique upright deciduous shrub from the same parentage as the rare \u2018Pride of Hever\u2019 Buddleja (B. crispa x B. lindleyana)<\/em>, which was bred 40 years prior, of which it closely resembles. The leaves are like those of B. lindleyana<\/em>, but slightly serrated. The flowers are bright purple and upright in open panicles in summer that may become more lax or arching once mature. They are an improvement on B. lindleyana<\/em> and are just as long, up to 2+ ft in length, and have retained some of the fine B. crispa<\/em> scent! Fast growing.<\/p>\n

                    Grows best in full sun in a somewhat sheltered position in well-drained, sandy or gravely soils. Does not like overly-wet conditions. Hard prune down to your knees towards the end of March or in April.<\/p>\n

                    ‘Pride of Longstock’ flowers are sterile and pollenless, so no seeds are produced and thus will keep blooming into autumn without deadheading.<\/p>\n

                          Philadelphus <\/em>hybrid (P. coulteri x P. lemoinei<\/em>) | Lemoine’s Mock Orange ‘Belle Etoile’<\/p>\n

                          ‘Belle Etoile’ Mock Orange is a deciduous fast-growing hybrid shrub prized for its intense, sweet, citrus and almost love-like fragrance. Introduced by French hybridizers in the late 1800s, it’s famous for its large, single creamy-white cupped flowers with a distinctive maroon-purple blush at the center, which burst into life just when spring-blooming shrubs are finishing their display (late spring to early summer).<\/p>\n

                          The plant has a spreading habit with graceful arching stems and typically fills out right down to the ground, reaching 6-8 ft tall and wide.<\/p>\n

                          Plant in full sun to part shade. Prefers average, well-drained soil, but is quite drought-tolerant and adaptable to clay once established. It’s ideal for low-maintenance landscapes, as an informal hedge, a mixed garden border, or planted near windows, patios, and entryways where the fragrance can be fully appreciated. Can tolerate temperatures down to -20 F.<\/p>\n

                          Mock Oranges are generally not susceptible to any serious pests or diseases, they do well with little attention, and they’re easy to transplant, too. Pruning should only be done immediately after the bloom cycle finishes. Since they bloom on “old wood” (growth from the previous year), trimming in late summer or fall could cut away next year’s flower buds. However, cut branches make excellent, long-lasting floral arrangements.<\/p>\n

                                Buddleja\/ Buddleia fallowiana<\/em>\u00a0| <\/em>Fallowiana Butterfly Bush ‘Blue’ (blue flower form)<\/p>\n

                                A deciduous shrub native to Yunnan, Sichuan, and Xizang, China.<\/p>\n

                                Fallowiana or Fallows Butterfly Bush (named after George Fallow), also sometimes called Chinese Butterfly Bush, is a flowering shrub with arching branches bearing lance-shaped, heavily-felted, whitish, silvery-green leaves that are soft to the touch, and panicles of highly-fragrant pale blue with orange eyes, blooming from late summer into early fall. The aroma is similar to that of the Buddleja davidii,\u00a0<\/em>but even sweeter. The flowers are similar too, but are a little bit smaller. The structure is similar, but fallowiana is slower growing, shorter, and a little more compact.<\/p>\n

                                The plants that grow from these seeds will have slight variation in the foliage fuzziness, plus flower structure and color.<\/p>\n

                                Buddleia fallowiana <\/em>naturally grows in open woodland, forest edges, and stream banks in mountainous elevations. In the garden, it grows best in fertile, free-draining soil in full sun. Will tolerate some shade. Goes mostly deciduous in winter and may die back to the ground in extremely cold winters. Site in a sheltered spot if possible. For the healthiest growth it is recommended to soft-prune in late autumn and then hard prune down to your knees in April.<\/p>\n

                                B. fallowiana <\/em>was one of the parents used to create the famous Buddleja hybrid, B<\/em>. \u2018Lochinch\u2019.<\/p>\n

                                    ROOTING INSTRUCTIONS:<\/p>\n

                                    How to prepare cuttings to root via rooting cubes inside a humidity dome.<\/b><\/p>\n

                                      \n
                                    1. Upon arrival, give cuttings a new fresh cut on the bottom of the stem. Then set in a cup of water for a minimum of 15 minutes.<\/li>\n
                                    2. After soaking, gently cut or scrape small marks into the bottom portion of the plant stem (\u00bd inch) with scissors or a razor blade.<\/li>\n
                                    3. Dip the scarred end of the stem into rooting gel or rooting powder (gel is superior). This can be done without rooting gel, but results are not as good.<\/li>\n
                                    4. Insert the plant stem into a rooting cube (Oasis cubes, grow plugs, soil-cubes, rock-wool cubes, etc) and place into a nursery tray with a humidity dome over the top. One cutting per cube.\u00a0Custom individual humidity domes can be made using plastic cups and\/or plastic cling wrap.<\/li>\n
                                    5. After the first 3-5 days, the humidity dome should be opened up or set ajar to slowly allow more air in as the plants start to root. At this point, the cubes should be allowed to become mostly dry before adding any more water.<\/li>\n
                                    6. Once 2-3 roots grow out of the bottom of the root-cube, the plant can be transplanted into soil.<\/li>\n
