P<\/em>hiladelphus<\/em>\u00a0‘Manteau d’Hermine’ x Philadelphus<\/em> ‘Virginal | Mock Orange ‘Variegata’<\/p>\n

‘Variegata’ Mock Orange is a result of an\u00a0irradiated selection of Philadelphus<\/em> ‘Manteau d’ Hermine’ x Philadelphus<\/em> ‘Virginal’. It’s a compact, deciduous shrub prized for its yellow-speckled variegation on its foliage and its highly fragrant white cup-shaped flowers that bloom in early summer.<\/p>\n

Like all spring and summer-blooming mock oranges, ‘Variegata’ forms flowers on the previous year’s wood, so its best to prune immediately after blooming to maintain shape and encourage fresh growth for the following season. If done in late summer\/early autumn, you can simply stick the old branches in the ground and most of them will break into leaf the next spring. Mock-oranges are very easy to propagate.<\/p>\n

‘Variegata’ is a medium sized shrub that grows to 4 ft x 4 ft, making it perfect for smaller gardens. Plant in full sun to part shade. Prefers average, well-drained soil, but is quite drought-tolerant and adaptable to clay once established. It’s ideal for low-maintenance landscapes, as an informal hedge, a mixed garden border, or planted near windows, patios, and entryways where its fragrance can be fully appreciated.<\/p>\n

‘Variegata’ and Mock Oranges in general are typically not susceptible to any serious pests or diseases. Plus they do well with little attention and they’re easy to transplant, too. Cut branches make excellent, long-lasting floral arrangements.<\/p>\n

      ROOTING INSTRUCTIONS:<\/p>\n

      How to prepare cuttings to root via rooting cubes inside a humidity dome.<\/b><\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Upon arrival, give cuttings a new fresh cut on the bottom of the stem. Then set in a cup of water for a minimum of 15 minutes.<\/li>\n
      2. After soaking, gently cut or scrape small marks into the bottom portion of the plant stem (\u00bd inch) with scissors or a razor blade.<\/li>\n
      3. Dip the scarred end of the stem into rooting gel or rooting powder (gel is superior). This can be done without rooting gel, but results are not as good.<\/li>\n
      4. Insert the plant stem into a rooting cube (Oasis cubes, grow plugs, soil-cubes, rock-wool cubes, etc) and place into a nursery tray with a humidity dome over the top. One cutting per cube.\u00a0Custom individual humidity domes can be made using plastic cups and\/or plastic cling wrap.<\/li>\n
      5. After the first 3-5 days, the humidity dome should be opened up or set ajar to slowly allow more air in as the plants start to root. At this point, the cubes should be allowed to become mostly dry before adding any more water.<\/li>\n
      6. Once 2-3 roots grow out of the bottom of the root-cube, the plant can be transplanted into soil.<\/li>\n
