Description
Buddleja crispa type agathosma| Cotton Candy Butterfly Bush
Himilayan Butterfly Bush, or Cotton Candy Butterfly Bush, is native to the Himalayas, where it grows into a large shrub in dry, rocky valleys. B. crispa type agathosma has the largest leaves of all the Buddleja crispa types, being larger and more deeply toothed. The silver leaves are thick and soft to the touch, tomentose, with the newest growth being nearly white. The silver-green foliage is a great contrast to the airy, cotton candy-pink flowers which bloom on last years wood right before the leaves start to grow out. One of the best parts about this plant is the aroma of the flowers in spring, which emit a heavenly cotton candy aroma, so the flowers not only have a fluffy cotton candy look to them, but they smell just like it, too, only better! It’s name, agathosma, means ‘good fragrance’.
It benefits being grown near a wall or a sheltered position out of the coldest winds, but is fairly hardy once established. Do not let it sit in water-logged soil. Good drainage is a must.
