Description
Tricyrtis puberula | Downy Toad Lily
Downy Toad Lily, Hairy Toad, or Japanese Toad Lily is a shade-loving, upright deciduous flowering plant native to China, featuring large, hairy green leaves with dark blotches, and chocolate-colored flowers which emerge in fall and summer.
In their native habitat they live in shade to part shade at the edges of forests and trail clearings where there is a break in the tree cover. They are also commonly found on the sloped grounds along creek beds, or regions that receive plenty of rainfall. Grows well with even moisture in rich, well-drained soil. Water as often as needed to keep the soil moist, but not soggy. Likewise, do not let the soil dry out fully like you would with other plants.
Gardeners who are seeking plants for shade will be pleased to discover Downy Toad Lily since they offer striking flowers in late summer to early fall when most shade gardens could use a point of interest.
