Description
Geum quellyon var. flora plena | Avens ‘Blazing Sunset’
Geum quellyon is a member of the rose family, that carries a common name of Scarlet Avens, Chilean Avens, Double Bloody Mary, Geum, and Grecian Rose. There are about 50 species found worldwide, primarily in temperate or montane regions. ‘Blazing Sunset’ is a Fleuroselect Award winner! Its 2.5- 3″blooms measure up to 50% larger than other Geum varieties. They are bright red and fully-double, resembling ruffly roses that sway in the breeze on 2-3’ tall stems. Flowers bloom like crazy starting in late spring and persisting through fall in temp. Will continue blooming into winter in moderate climates (with dead-heading). The foliage is a lush, green, compact mound, making a good filler for the front or middle of the border.
Does well in full sun in mild summer climates and afternoon shade where it is hot. Geum dislike heat combined with humidity. Prefers moist, fertile soil with adequate winter drainage. Plants can be divided every 3-4 years.
Avens are one of the toughest, heat tolerant and longest lived perennial flowers one can grow. Plus they are rarely bothered by pests or diseases… Attracts butterflies and is deer and rabbit resistant. Whats not to like?!
Enjoy them as a cut flower in fresh bouquets too!
