Description
Buddleja cordata var. tomentella | Hairy Mexican Butterfly Bush
Buddleja cordata var. tomentella is known as Hairy Mexican Butterfly Bush or Los Lerios Butterfly Bush, was named as a subspecies of Buddleja cordata in 1924 by Eliane Meyer Norman, a French born American botanist. Variety Tomentella is distinguished from the species by the closely packed hairs on the underside of the leaves, as opposed to tufts of hair on the species. Native to Northeastern Mexico, it grows in rocky, bone-dry hillsides near the town of Los Lirios at 7,000′ elevation.
July through August clusters of small, sweetly scented creamy-white flowers are produced in terminal panicles that attract an abundance of unusual pollinators, including wasps and hoverflies, who become strangely hypnotized in the blooms.
