Description
Buddleja hybrid | Butterfly Bush ‘Asian Moon’ (B. davidii var nanhoensis ‘Moonshadow’ x B. asiatica)
Buddleia ‘Asian Moon’ is a newer Butterfly Bush hybrid introduced by the University of Arkansas. It’s sterile so will not set seed. This is advantageous because the plant will continue blooming since it does not put any energy into creating seed.
‘Asian Moon’ typically grows into a rounded shrub reaching 7 feet at maturity. The leaves are willow-like, elliptic, medium green, and slightly glossy with serrate margins. The beautiful blooms are purple with orange-eyes, are highly fragrant, and typically bloom from June to September, or sometimes even until the first frost. As the common name suggests, Butterfly Bushes are very attractive to butterflies and a myriad of other pollinators like hummingbirds and bumblebees.
Plants grow best in full sun in well drained soils. Drought tolerant, but will drink plenty of water during the hottest months if watered regularly. For the best shape, look, and performance, we always recommend a hard-prune down to your knees in April. With a semi prune to reduce the plants height before it heads into winter as to prevent wind rocking of the plant/roots.
Generally deer resistant.
Since Buddleja ‘Asian Moon’ does not set seed, it is NOT invasive and is listed on the ‘Approved Buddleja Cultivars’ list for Washington and Oregon states.
