The Oak-leaf Butterfly Bush, also called Oak-leaved Butterfly Bush, Indian Butterfly Bush, Indica Butterfly Bush, Indoor Oak, and Parlor Oak, is an extremely rare butterfly bush that’s almost exclusively grown as an indoor houseplant. It was discovered in 1785 in the Indian Ocean Islands (Madagascar, the Comoro Islands, and the Mascarene Islands) where it grows as an evergreen up to 12 ft tall. In cultivation it is more likely to stay under 3-4 ft.
Indoor Oak Buddleja plants are unique because they look nothing like the rest of the Buddleja genus- it’s a shrub with climbing or trailing branches with glossy, dark green, rounded, oak-shaped leaves with a bronzy cast. Leaves are opposite, smooth, and have scalloped edges. The leaf shape, as implied by the name, is oak-like. The small clusters of sparse greenish yellow to yellow or white tubular flowers are borne at the end of branches and are fragrantly stinky. Plants rarely flower in cultivation, and are grown mostly for their unusual foliage.
Oak-leaf Butterfly Bush grows great outdoors with high heat and high humidity, like Florida, where it has now become established in Broward, Martin, and Palm Beach counties. However, plants seem to do best given part shade. In temperate regions, it is most often grown indoors as a houseplant or in a greenhouse. Pinch new growth to ensure a dense habit.
Intolerant of frost and low humidity. Temperatures near freezing can be fatal. Do not over-water when small.
Can be used as a bonsai subject.
