Description
Aquilegia flabelatta | Fan Columbine
Fan Columbine, also called Fan-leaved Columbine and Dwarf Columbine, is a short-lived, compact, perennial Columbine species native to alpine regions of Japan and Korea. Plants reach only a few inches tall with blue-grey, waxy, fan-like foliage. From April to June, stems arise with several dainty, nodding flowers with violet-blue sepals and white petals. Very cute plants that may reseed in the garden.
Plants can tolerate full sun in cool summer regions, but do best with some shade in warmer regions. Well-drained, moist soil is preferred. Fan Columbine makes an excellent plant for edging, rock gardens, or to add color and texture to a woodland area.
Allow plants to self seed for successive generations.
Deer don’t particularly care for Columbine and will usually leave it alone for other treats.
