Description
Oenothera fruticosa | Narrow-leaf Evening Primrose ‘Blood Orange’
There are 145 species of Evening Primroses, all of which originate in the Americas. Since the first species were introduced to Europe in the early 17th century, they have become naturalized worldwide.
Narrow-leaf Evening Primrose ‘Blood Orange’ is a day-flowering member of the Evening Primrose family with a low-growing, creeping habit and a diminutive size. The miniature yellow-rimmed, red-eyed flowers bloom all season long on prostrate stems. They look great in the rock garden, front of the flower beds, or in a container.
We originally ordered these seeds from over seas as Oenothera ‘Colin Porter’, but after collecting our seeds it seems there’s no longer any substantial documentation of a plant with that name. Furthermore, the sources that list Oenothera ‘Blood Orange’ suggest various Oenothera species, including O. epilobium, O. tetragona, O. versicolor, and O. fruticosa, but we are confident O. fruiticosa is the correct one.
Sow seeds directly where they are to grow in fall or early spring or start indoors several weeks before the last frost, using the most standard seed sprouting practices. Seeds should germinate within 2-4 weeks.
