Description
Datisca Cannabina | False Hemp
False Hemp, also known as bastard hemp, Cretan hemp, or acalbir, is a stately & highly ornamental back of the border perennial with rich green, pinnate leaves and strong arching stems, ultimately reaching 8-12+ feet at maturity! (Will not flower the first year of growth.)
Datisca Cannabina is a dioecious plant, meaning male and females are found on separate plants. Female plants will develop long, arching branches with dangling tassels of white pistils and eventually, small seedpods with dust-sized seeds, and male plants will develop elegant yellow flowers that hang from the pendulous branches.
Will reseed moderately. We didn’t see any seedlings until the fourth year.
False Hemp is a hard-to-find, underutilized, one-of-a-kind, gigantic shrub and is without question one of our favorite plants of all time! To see a full grown specimen in person is to experience a plant unlike any other.
