Myosotis sylvatica | Woodland Forget-Me-Not ‘Blue’
Wood, or Woodland Forget-Me-Not originated from Europe and is one of the most well-known flower names due to the romantic legend: a medieval knight, gathering blue flowers along a stream for his lady love, was suddenly swept away by flood waters. As she disappeared, he tossed the bouquet to his lady with the immortal words, “Forget me not.”…making it one of the all-time world favorites among wildflowers used at funerals.
Woodland Forget-Me-Nots are an herbaceous biennial with a mounded form, with tiny 5-petaled sky-blue flowers with yellow centers atop leafless, branches. It puts on vegetative growth the first year, and flowers in spring and early summer the second year, and then dies. However, Forget-Me-Not self-seeds and will thereby endure for years in the garden. It is best to interplant with late-season bloomers as to hide the dying foliage toward the end of its life.
Does not like full sun and will go dormant in the summer. Grows best in partial shade to shade and prefers to be in moist conditions, even in shallow water like drainage ditches or along streams. It is not particular as to soil type or pH.
Recommended for mass planting, edging borders, ground cover, general garden use and naturalizing woodland gardens.
Reseeds easily and can become invasive. However, plants are extremely easy to uproot.
