Description
Lupinus arboreus | Coastal Bush Lupine
Bush Lupine, also known as Yellow Bush Lupine, Coastal Bush Lupine or Tree Lupine, is a fast growing evergreen shrub or small tree native to Coastal areas in Western North America where it thrives in coastal habitats such as bluffs, dunes, and slopes, providing erosion control. Lupinus arboreus is multi-branching with a stout tree-like trunk bearing dark-green, palmate compound foliage. The pea-like flowers are bright-yellow and occur on 6-8 inch spires held just above the foliage.
Grows in full sun in very well-drained soil in a yard that can accommodate its large size. Tolerant of drought and neglect, it doesn’t mind poor soil, and does not like overly-wet roots, so provide good drainage and maybe mix in some lava rock if you’re planting it in a soil that’s not light and fluffy. Makes an excellent choice for dry gardens, parking strips and hillsides.
Lupine seeds can be planted in just about any region and any climate. For best results, grow in full sun in moist, but well-drained soil, and protect young plants from slugs and snails. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage repeat-blooms. Will self-sow. Not bothered by deer or rabbits.
