Description
Capsicum baccatum | Peruvian Pepper ‘Mad Hatter’
500- 1000 Scoville
The Mad Hatter is a hybrid with a funny triangular-hat shape, like the soldiers in the Revolutionary War wore. It was bred from a Bishop’s Crown pepper, and is a member of the Capsicum baccatum pepper species from South America. It has been developed to perform better in North American climates and with higher yields, too. This pepper could win on it’s uniqueness alone, however the plant’s vigor, earliness, high yields, large size, and great taste all contribute to its All-America Selection Award (AAS) it received in 2017. In our experience it is one of the first pepper plants to produce and the yield is heavy. And the pepper color changes from a yellowy-green to orange to red, which can be harvested anywhere on that color spectrum.
This is a nice pepper to grow with heat anybody can enjoy. The taste is a refreshing, citrusy floral flavor that remains sweet, only occasionally expressing mild heat. Mad Hatter is a mild pepper, ranging from 500 to 1,000 Scoville heat units, which is 5 to 15 times more mild than Jalapenos.
Expect vigorous and robust plants that are easy to grow. Full sun. Peppers like it hot.
Peppers act as annuals in northern zones, but are a perennial plant in tropical, frost-free zones.
