Description
Hypoestes phyllostachya| Polka Dot Plant
Polka Dot Plant, also known as Freckle Face, Measles Plant, Flamingo Plant, Baby’s Tears, and Confetti Plant
is a vibrant, herbaceous tropical plant native to Madagascar, known for its highly-contrasting, eye-catching, speckled foliage. It is popular as an indoor houseplant, an annual garden accent, a container accompaniment and a classic terrarium/vivarium staple.
Its oval leaves are green and brightly splashed with splotches of pink, white, or red, depending on the variety. The beautifully colorful leaves are why Polka Dot Plant is most commonly grown. Under the right conditions small, tubular, inconspicuous lilac or pink flowers are borne in late summer.
When grown indoors it typically stays compact, reaching 12 to 18 inches tall and wide. Pinch the top stems and leaves back regularly to encourage a bushier, fuller plant rather than a tall, spindly one.
Thrives in bright, indirect light. Too little light will cause the plant to lose its spots and become ‘leggy’, while direct sunlight can scorch the leaves. Likes consistently moist but not soggy soil. The foliage will droop instantly when thirsty, but bounces back quickly once watered. Prefers warm, humid conditions, so if growing indoors try to keep away from cold drafts and dry heating vents.
Three varieties are included in this bundle (2 of each):
