Description
Sonchus palmensis | La Palma Sow-thistle
La Palma Sow-thistle, also known as Tree Sonchus and Palm Weed, is a rare tender tall evergreen perennial shrub from the Canary Island that’s a giant dandelion relative. The young lanceolate, tooth-lobed leaves have a weak woolly indumentum while the mature leaves are glabrous and up to 3 ft long arch out from palm-like, stout, branching trunks with sunny bunches of 2 inch yellow flowers that burst out from the canopy in spring and summer.
Grows well in full sun or part shade, regular or low water, and average, rich and well-drained soil. Plant in compost-enriched soil for the biggest show. Hardy to 25 F.
Attracts bees, making it an excellent addition to tropical pollinator gardens.
