Description
Echium hierrense | Herrio Vipers Bugloss
Herrio Vipers Bugloss, also known as Iron Taginaste, Hierro-Natternkopf (in German), and Taginaste del Hierro (in Spanish), is native to the Canary Islands (Northwest Hierrero). It is a shrub and grows primarily in the subtropical biome in rocky locations and on the outskirts of forested area. The leaf blades arre grey-green, lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate with a pointed upper end. It’s the only Echium species we’ve grown that has foliage that is smooth to the touch- the foliage does not have pokey trichomes on it, or if it does, they’re hidden or in places that won’t get you which is a huge plus! The individual flowers are pure white in color and slightly larger than most Echiums. This is a beautiful Echium species, so beautiful we had to find room for it on our front porch while it flowered. If in cold and temperate climates, keeping it out of the early spring rains helps.
Sow seeds in the spring, by barely covering with sand or soil, or start indoors with heat, humidity, and light.
These seeds are not easy to collect and are extremely rare to find in cultivation. We are the only company in the US and perhaps the world to currently offer these seeds. There is very little information available on this Echium species. Some of the info below is estimated.

Sun exposure: Full sun
Mature height: 5-6 ft
Mature width- 3-4 ft

A second year plant is shown in the photos.
