Description
Hoya carnosa | Variegated Waxplant ‘Tricolor’
Wax Plant, also called Porcelain Flower or Wax Flower, is a tropical, succulent, vining plant with thick, wax-like leaves. Native to subtropical regions of East Asia and the Western Pacific. In its tropical rainforest habitat, the plant usually grows as an epiphyte and is well acquainted to humid conditions, where they are found vining along trees and cascading out of available crevices. Owing to their epiphytic nature they have the ability to draw nutrients and moisture out of the warm, damp jungle air.
The Hoya carnosa variegata, commonly known as ‘Hoya Tricolor’ is easy to recognize with its pink stem and tricolor foilage– pink, cream, and deep green. Plants are evergreen plants derived from common Carnosa species. They are often grown in a hanging basket due to its trailing habit, where over time, the leaves would beautifully trail from its pinkish vines. Aside from its lush foliage, the plant can also produce dainty flowers in spring to early summer that emit a mildly sweet fragrance.
As an epiphytic plant, less is more when it comes to watering Hoyas. The key to avoiding overwatering, which can be fatal to the plant, is to check the top inch of the soil to see if it’s completely dry to the touch. Ideally you only want to water Hoya carnosa Variegata once every two weeks, but will need to be adjusted for the warmer seasons as the plant may need more moisture. We lightly water Waxplant Tricolor about once a week in a high humidity, high light indoor environment. Be mindful of your Hoya tricolor’s watering needs, and do not overdo it as it can quickly lead to root rot. Ideal humidity for Hoya carnosa Variegata is at least 40-60%.
Due to its ease of care and appealing characteristics, Hoya Carnosa has been a well-loved houseplant for generations and is truly a majestic houseplant that;s a must-have for any indoor plant collector.
