B. alternifolia x B. agathosma | Butterfly Bush ‘Longstock Gem’
‘Longstock Gem’ Butterfly Bush is a beautiful, upright deciduous shrub with lilac-blue flowers with pale orange throats. Plants are very early-flowering (the first of the hardy Buddlejas), have larger flowers than B. alternifolia and are extremely aromatic, too. Attractive oak-shaped leaves are alternate on some shoots and opposite on others, changing to maroon and yellow in the autumn.
Its large habit makes it a great plant for a border or a screen. Remove all the old flowering branches. If it becomes too large, hard prune to the ground before the end of June (after bloom). It pays to reduce the height by at least 50%. If left unpruned it may get very large.
Note that the stems are excellent when used as plant supports and will last several seasons unlike other branches that only last one season.
This Buddleja does not set seed.
