Hesperis matronalis | Dames Rocket ‘White’
Dames Rocket is also commonly known as Sweet Rocket, Damask Violet, Dame’s-violet, Dames-wort, Dame’s Gilliflower, Night-scented Gilliflower, Queen’s Gilliflower, Rogue’s Gilliflower, Winter Gilliflowers, Wild Phlox, and Mother-of-the-Evening. Hesperis comes from the Greek for “evening” (scent), and matronalis means “of the matron/mother”.
It is a fragrant, biennial wildflower in the mustard family that is often grown as an ornamental, but may be invasive in certain regions. The white flowers produce a strong, sweet scent at night, and are often mistaken for beautiful native phlox, but differs by having four petals instead of five, and the leaves of dame’s rocket are sharply toothed and alternate while phlox are smooth and opposite.
Prefers moist, well-drained soil in partial shade, but will also grow in full sun.
Has historically been used in cottage gardens for scent, as a cut flower, in herbal remedies for women, and in salads since the leaves taste like garlic.
