Description
Sonchus congestus (syn. S. abbreviatus, S. jacquinii) | Congestus Sow-thistle
There is very little information on Sonchus congestus. It’s an herbaceous plant endemic to the Canary Islands, found in Tenerife in forested areas in Sierra Anaga and along the north coast at elevations ranging from 330–2,620 ft. It is also found in the central and northern regions of Gran Canaria. Sturdy branching trunk and thick branches with large, lance-shaped, wavy-edged leaves topped by tight bunches of 4” bright yellow dandelion-type flowers that can certainly bring a tropical feeling to the garden.
Does well in average, rich and well-drained soil. Prefers full sun, but doesn’t mind some shade. Grows well in containers and in-ground.
Attracts bees, making it an excellent addition to pollinator gardens.
