Description
Buddleja weyeriana | Golden Butterfly Bush ‘Dim Sun’ (a sport of ‘Honeycomb’ Butterfly Bush)
Golden Butterfly Bush, also known as Weyeriana Butterfly Bush or Yellow-flowered Butterfly Bush, is one of the most popular of all Buddleja varieties on the market. ‘Dim Sun’ is a ‘sport’ of B. weyeriana ‘Honeycomb’ that we discovered on our property in WA state. Rather than the bright yellow flowers of ‘Honeycomb, the ‘Dim Sun’ variety has more of a muted or pale yellow to white flower color, looking to be halfway inbetween B. ‘Honeycomb’ and B. ‘Moonlight’. During the budding stage, the blooms do retain the lilac-flush of color.
To the best of our knowledge, there have not been any other B. weyeriana sports introduced to the US market for over 30 years, so we’re excited to offer this beauty to Butterfly Bush lovers! Since this does not set seed (unless pollinated), it will continue to flower well into autumn. The blooms are fragrant and attract a myriad of pollinators including honeybees, Bumblebees, and butterflies as they are often one of the last to stay in bloom during autumn. Once established, a plant can reach 8 ft tall and 5 ft wide in one year (when pruned down to the knees in April). If not pruned back each year, it can grow taller. In comparison to B. davidii plants, this hybrid produces stronger branches, grows slightly shorter and more columnar and well kept. For the best shape, look, and performance, we always recommend a hard-prune down to your knees in April.
Grows best in full sun in well drained soils. Drought tolerant, but will drink plenty of water during the hottest months if watered regularly.
