Description
Buddleia hybrid (Buddleja loricata x Buddleja crispa) | Butterfly Bush ‘Silver Anniversary’ (‘Morning Mist’)
The Butterfly Bush, also known as a Summer Lilac, is native to China. Their natural habitat consists of forest clearings, riverbanks and limestone outcrops, and they grow exceptionally well on waste grounds, demolition sites, railway-lines, and even in the mortar of walls.
Buddleja ‘Silver Anniversary’ is a modern, ornamental Butterfly Bush cross of Buddleja loricata x Buddleja crispa. This special and extremely rare hybrid has an upright-arching framework of graceful stems and remarkable, exceptionally woolly, white, lance-shaped foliage and white flowers with orange eyes are held in dense clusters and appear in late summer at the tips of the branches. The wonderful fragrance is more honey-like than it is musky, and the bees and butterflies keep busy on the nectar-rich blooms in late summer. More silver and stronger growing than either parent. Sterile. Won’t set seed.
Makes a fantastic addition to a mixed or herbaceous border, creating a strong contrast in bright or pastel color schemes or against dark-leaved dahlias. A real attention-grabber. It’s worth noting that silver-leaved plants are wholly easier to grow and manage. They more easily reflect hot sun and keep themselves cool and hydrated. They tend to be great for first time gardeners and those that want a low maintenance landscape. There are no other Buddleja hybrids on the US market that have quite the same silvery, woolly leaves that this plant does!
‘Silver Anniversary’ thrives in well-drained, fertile soil in a sunny spot. Once established, it is extremely drought tolerant. Makes a great patio container plant, too.
