Description
Buddleja hybrid (B. weyeriana Sungold x B. davidii ‘Ile de France’| Butterfly Bush ‘Blue Boy’
‘Blue Boy’ Butterfly Bush is an interesting and rare blue form of B. weyeriana, bred by Peter Moore in 2000 in England.
Big leaves in spring and really interesting lilac-blue flowers with a bright-orange eye. Extremely vigorous. Flowers from August to October.
Part of its appeal is its continued flowering (since the plant does not set seed), and its unique, pendulous, blue, globose-type flower heads. The blooms are highly fragrant and attract a myriad of pollinators. Honeybees and Bumblebees are particularly fond of Buddleja ‘Blue Boy’ flowers, as they are often one of the last to stay in bloom during the late autumn months. Once established, a plant can reach 8 ft tall and 5 ft wide in one season, with an upright-arching to spreading habit. If not pruned back each year, it can grow taller. In comparison to B. davidii plants, this hybrid produces stronger branches, in a tighter shrub form. For the best shape, look, and performance, we always recommend a hard-prune down to your knees in April. Come winter, we semi prune to reduce the plants height to prevent wind rocking of the plant/roots.
The growing conditions are the same as B. davidii- plants grow best in full sun in well drained soils. Drought tolerant, but will drink plenty of water during the hottest months if watered regularly.
Buddleja ‘Blue Boy’ does not set seed.
