Description
Buddleja/Buddleia hybrid| Butterfly Bush ‘Grand Cascades’ (Proprietary B. hybrid x B. hybrid ‘Wisteria Lane’)
Butterfly Bush, also known as Summer Lilac, is a fast-growing, semi-evergreen shrub that has an upright, stretching habit.
These are open-pollinated seeds of the ‘Grand Cascades’ Buddleja cultivar, which is an inter-species butterfly bush hybrid that was introduced in 2018 that has giant, cascading, forked panicles, the only forked Buddleja we’ve seen in the United States! The light lavender-purple flower panicles are an astounding 14″ long and 4″ thick.
The plants that grow from these seeds will be variable in color and size, but mostly resembling that of the parent with large flowers in hues of lavender and purple.
Butterfly Bushes ability to grow on waste ground, demolition sites, railway-lines and even in the mortar of walls is remarkable. Native to China its natural habitat consists of forest clearings, riverbanks and limestone outcrops. For the healthiest growth it is recommended to soft-prune in late autumn and then hard prune down to your knees in April. Mature Grand Cascade plants will reach around 7 ft in height, shorter than straight Davidiis, and will bloom repeatedly if spent flowers are dead-headed. The blooms start in mid-summer and continue on into autumn. The highly aromatic honey-scented flowers are highly attractive to butterflies, hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators.
