Description
Teucrium hyrcanicum | Iranian Germander ‘Purple Tails’
Iranian Germander, also known as Caucasian Germander, Iranian Wood Sage, or Purple Tails Wood Sage, is an herbaceous perennial with a mounded form of aromatic, sage-like green foliage, purple stems, and long, elegant spikes of fuschia-purple flowers that resemble an animals tail bloom from late summer to fall. ‘Purple Tails’ looks much like Long-leaf Speedwell in habit and flower, but is more heat and drought tolerant plant. Its relatively fine texture sets it apart from other garden plants with less refined foliage.
Teucrium hyrcanicum is a relatively low maintenance plant and does best in full sun to partial shade. It will grow in poor soils, though optimum conditions are average, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils. The soil should be kept consistently moist, until established. Once established it is drought tolerant. Best cut back to the ground in late winter before active growth resumes.
It’s a good selection for planting in outdoor pots and containers and a great choice for attracting bees and butterflies. Fortunately it isn’t particularly attractive to deer who tend to leave it alone in favor of tastier treats. It has no significant negative characteristics.
