Description
Consolida regalis | Rocket Larkspur ‘Snow Cloud’
Rocket Larkspur, also called Forking Larkspur, Field Larkspur, and Royal Knights Spur, is a wonderful annual flower that comes in a wide range of colors. The name Larkspur refers to the shape of the spurred calyx, with “Delphinium” reserved for its perennial relatives. Consolida (Larkspur) is sometimes included in the genus Delphinium, but is considered to be a separate genus botanically. The flower structure differs from Delphiniums in that it only has one united petal, rather than the four or more separate petals found in most Delphiniums. The fruit is different, too, which is comprised of a single follicle, instead of a cluster of 3-5 together.
Consolida regalis ‘Snow Cloud’ is more delicate and ethereal in form than other Larkspurs, usually having bushy, multi-branched plants that form clouds of graceful, pure-white, single flowers that sway and bob in the breeze, like tiny doves. ‘Snow Cloud’ is no ordinary larkspur, staying shorter than other varieties, and is easier to grow and longer in flower than the spire forms. The appearance is remarkably similar to gypsophila (Babys Breath) more than it is to a Delphinium, making it especially well-suited for use as a high volume, low-density filler.
Prefers well-drained and evenly moist soil. Tolerant of cooler temps.
Germination notes: Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before your last frost. Germination may take a couple weeks or more and may be sporadic. To improve the germination rate, chill seeds one week before sowing. Seeds require darkness to germinate and do not germinate well above 55F- keep cool.
Harvest as cut flowers when a third of the blossoms are open on a stem. Has a 7 day+ vase life.
