Description
Verbascum virgatum| Wand Mullein
Verbascum virgatum, known as Wand Mullein, Green Mullein, Purplestem Mullein, and Twiggy Mullein, is native to western and Mediterranean Europe. It’s a tough, hardy, biennial or short-lived perennial that produces spikes of bright yellow flowers with purple centers.
Wand Mullein prefers a light alkaline soil with full sun and good drainage. Grows to 4-6 ft in height with a spread of around 18 inches on larger plants. Grows strong stems and a deep tap root. Ideal for including in informal cottage style mixed borders, giving height and interest for middle to back of the border. Grows great on slopes and flats too. Plant in groups for most profound effects. Easy to grow from seed, and reseeds freely.
The tiny seeds are abundant and can remain viable in the soil for decades. Mulleins can be easily managed by manually removing the plants before seed-set, not disturbing the soil, or by establishing dense vegetative cover that will prevent seed germination. Sow seed indoors, or late spring to summer to early fall outdoors.
Low maintenance, deer resistant, and attracts various pollinators.
