Eschscholzia californica | California Poppy ‘Astound’ Mix’
Poppies are a large family of flowering plants that include annuals, biennials, perennials, and even semi-shrubs and small evergreen trees prized for their delicate, silken petals that glow in the suns rays. They are found all over the globe, and in a wide range of environments, but predominantly in the northern hemisphere.
The ‘Astound’ California Poppy mix has fine textured blue-green leaves and around 7 different flower colors all collected from the same batch of plants shown in the photos. The flowers open on sunny days and close on cloudy days and during nighttime hours. When planted in mass they add a cacophony of color to an area.
California Poppies grow as an annual in most zones, but a perennial in zones 9-10. Poppies do not like being transplanted, so it’s best to start them from seed outdoors naturally by scattering seeds, as they prefer the cool night temperatures. Direct sow seeds 4 weeks before the last spring frost, or in late autumn if in zones 8+. They can be established directly in the garden, in flower beds, along driveways, walkways & fences, etc; growing best in well-drained, loose soils. Will tolerate some shade.
Very easy to grow, it is an excellent choice for dry areas, informal flower beds, borders, gravel, and rock gardens. Heat and drought-tolerant, requiring little care. Readily self-sows. Honey bees and wild bees are often seen collecting pollen from the flowers.
