Description
Echium nervosum (formerly Echium fastuosum) | Coastal Pride of Madeira
Coastal Pride of Madeira, also known as Blue Pride of Madeira, is an evergreen perennial flower that grows rapidly into a multi-branched woody shrub with grey-green narrow leaves and large, impressive and intense sky-blue flowers with extra long white and powder blue stamens. The flower heads grow up to 12 inches long and are intriguing to look at up close or from afar!
Echium nervosum grows to a max height of around 7 ft tall and a spread of 4-5 ft. Makes a great selection for a rockery garden or a dry slope. Grows best in a sunny and well-drained spot in any reasonable soil. It’s coastal weather tolerant and can handle dry conditions and a light frost or two, like some other Echiums which may not show damage until there are prolonged temps around 25-27 F. After flowering, remove the spent flower heads and prune lightly. Nice to look at, but not to touch because the leaves and stalks are armed with prickly hairs like other Echium species.
Coastal Pride of Madeira is easily propagated by seed. Start indoors, or sow seed in the spring, by barely covering with sand or soil.
These seeds are not easy to collect and are extremely rare to find in cultivation.
