Description
Sonchus arboreus (Sonchus arborea) | Tree Sow-thistle
Tree Sow-thistle, also known as Giant Sow-thistle, Milk Thistle, and Tree Sonchus is an extremely rare annual or biennial plant found naturally only in a few locations in western Tenerife. It has a thick, succulent stem which supports broad, lobed leaves that exude a milky sap when damaged. Bright yellow, dandelion-like flowers shoot out from atop its tall branches.
Plant prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Its best to keep soil on the drier side, especially when overwintering. Grows well in containers and in the ground in warmer areas. Adapts well to rocky and coastal environments by storing water in its fleshy leaves for drought resilience.
Attracts bees, making it an excellent addition to tropical pollinator gardens.
