Description
Veronica longifolia | Long-leaf Speedwell ‘Mixed Colors’
Long-leaf speedwell, also called Garden Speedwell, Gypsyweed, Bird’s Eye, and Paul’s Betony, is an upright, herbaceous perennial that forms a low mound of attractive lance-shaped green leaves with upright stems bearing numerous tall, tapered spikes of beautifully colored flowers that rise well above the foliage. The genus name honors Saint Veronica who reportedly gave a handkerchief to Jesus so he could wipe sweat from his face on the way to Calvary, with some plants having markings that resemble the markings on the sacred handkerchief.
The Long-leaf Speedwell ‘Mixed Colors’ features a mixture of popular Speedwell colors including, pink, fuschia, purple, blue and more. The showy flowers reach up to 14 inches tall and bloom from June to August. This is a great choice for somebody who can’t decide which single color they want and/or who wants to add bright pops of color to their flower beds.
Grows best in average, consistently moist, well-drained soil in full sun. Requires adequate winter drainage. Will tolerate light shade. Deadhead for repeat blooms. Grows near the border edge, in containers and rock gardens. Spreads via slow-growing root-stock and self-seeding.
