Description
Thelocactus setispinus (syn. Ferocactus setispinus or Hamatocactus setispinus) | Miniature Barrel Cactus
Miniature Barrel Cactus, also known as Hedgehog Cactus, Strawberry Cactus, Twisted Rib Cactus, and Fishhook Cactus, is a well known cactus species that produces can have spines that range in color from white to yellow to brown, and even red on the same plant, plus a succession of large, silky yellow flowers with deep red centers that bloom is summer and autumn.
It’s natural habitat is thorn shrub vegetation and coastal lowlands under Mesquite scrubs.
Miniature Barrel Cactus is easy and well worth growing, reaching 6 x 4 inches and requiring little care once they have reached a nice flowering size. It’s well suited for any rich, well drained soil in full sun throughout the year and may even do better with some light shade in summer.
Container-grown Thelocactus setispinus plants do best in a well-drained, porous cactus soil mixture that doesn’t contain too much humus. This plant needs plenty of water (about once a week) and one needs to be careful to not wet the bodies of the plants while they are in sunlight- a wet cactus in the sunlight can cause sun-scorching which can lead to scars or fungal infections
Deer and rabbit resistant due to its spines.
