Description
Sonchus platylepis (syn. Babcockia platylepis) | Bulbous-head Sow-thistle
There is very little information on Bulbous-head Sow-thistle (also called Silvery Flycatcher). The flower buds are unique because they resemble mini roses before opening up to reveal their bright-yellow dandelion-type flowers. The lobed leaves are tomentous, giving them a unique look, plus a thick, succulent stem that exudes a milky sap when damaged.
The native range is Canary Islands (Gran Canaria), where it grows primarily in a subtropical climate. Prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Grows well in containers and in-ground.
Attracts bees, making it an excellent addition to pollinator gardens.
