Description
Alternanthera ficoidea | Calico Plant ‘Party Time’ rooted plant in pot
Calico Plant, also known as Josephs Coat, and Parrot Leaf, is a tender, annual, tropical flowering plant with many cultivars in a variety of colors ranging from orange, red, copper, and purple. Alternanthera ficoidea ‘Party Time’ is especially attractive with its green leaves painted with hot pink streaks and blotches. Some leaves are entirely pink, some entirely green, while most are a combination of both. This plant is a showstopper year-round.
Calico plants do best in full sun to part shade and the leaves are most colorful in full sun. Well suited for shadier areas, sites with afternoon shade, or light shade all day. Alternanthera ‘Party Time’ have a mounding, shrubby habit and grow to a height of 12-16 inches. Can survive mild winters into zone 9 if given a protected site, an appropriate organic mulch, and excellent winter drainage. Plants can be successfully overwintered in a well lit area indoors where not hardy.
Very commonly used as an ornamental container plant where it spills over the sides, or can be grown outdoors as a perennial in zones 9+ or an annual in all other zones, or as an indoor tropical houseplant.
Deer will pass this up for tastier treats.
