Description
Hydrangea macrophylla | Variegated Lacecap Hydrangea ‘Mariesii Variegata’
Variegated Lacecap Hydrangea, also commonly known as Variegated Bigleaf Hydrangea, is a medium-sized, bushy deciduous shrub and one of relatively few Hydrangeas that would deserve a place in the garden even if it never flowered! The variegation, which can vary from leaf to leaf, gives the plant a bright, almost luminous appearance in the garden and remains ornamental from spring until leaf drop.
In summer, ‘Mariesii Variegata’ produces elegant flattened flower clusters known as ‘Lacecaps’ that appear in spectacular shades of blue-purple, blue, lavender, or pink depending on soil conditions in which it is planted–blue in acidic soils, and pink in alkaline soils. One of its most enchanting features is its beautiful blue to violet-purple pollen that dusts the flowers and shimmers in the sunlight, looking almost like sparkling fairy dust scattered across the inflorescence.
At maturity plants develop into substantial, rounded deciduous shrubs, generally reaching approximately 4–6 feet tall and wide making them large enough to have genuine presence in the landscape while not becoming unmanageable.
Grows best in fertile, moisture-retentive, well-drained soils and sun to partial shade; afternoon shade is appreciated in hotter climates. In cool maritime climates it can tolerate considerably more sun provided adequate water is available.
As with other traditional Bigleaf Hydrangeas, ‘Mariesii Variegata’ flowers primarily from buds carried on old wood, so if shaping is necessary, prune shortly after flowering.
