Description
Hedera helix erecta| Tree Ivy (English Ivy) ‘Erecta’ rooted in 4-inch pot [6-12 inches tall]
Tree Ivy, also known as Bush Ivy, Dwarf Ivy, and Candelabra Ivy, is a slow growing, non-climbing evergreen shrub that grows to 3-4 ft tall with 3-lobed, 1-inch, dark-green leaves arranged evenly on opposing sides of vertical stems, resembling a leafy candelabra.
It is interesting to note that ‘Tree Ivy’ is merely a mature form of the common English Ivy, Hedera helix. When grown in the shade, English Ivy rarely develops into its mature tree-ivy form. It can often live for decades and never transform, and ones that don’t will never flower or set fruit. However, English ivy that’s grown in a great deal of sun will literally genetically change to produce upright branches that emulate free-standing shrubs. These strong upright branches cease to exhibit the trailing & climbing habits entirely. When the change does happen though, the genetic transformation is irreversible; the upright portion of the ivy will never change back into a trailing ivy, and if rooted separately, will develop over time into an upright shrub.
There are many Tree Ivys on the market, but this cultivar here, ‘Erecta , is sterile and will never set seed, making it vastly more preferable over fertile tree-ivies because of their potential to seed into temperate woodlands.
This is NOT to be confused with the other sterile tree ivy variety called ‘Conglomerata’ which has a more sprawling habit and leaves that are more round and fold upwards.
Plant in full sun to light shade and water regularly. Tolerates coastal areas and seaside conditions and is hardy to below 0 degrees F.
‘Erecta’ Tree Ivy is a hard-to-find oddity that makes a fantastic evergreen ornamental plant and creates conversation among garden guests.
