Description
Zephyranthes tubispatha (syn. Habranthus tubispathus) | Rio Grande Copper Lily
Rio Grande Copper Lily, also known as Barbados Snowdrop is native to southern South America and belongs to the rain lily family. It’s a perennial bulbous flower species in the Amaryllidaceae family known for crocus-like flowers that burst into life a couple days after a summer thunderstorm ends a period of dryer weather, sending up a solitary flower that as with all former Habranthus species, is not fully upright on the stem but held at a slight angle, and characterized by its bright yellow petals with copper tones on the outside and orange-red center. It’s narrow, linear, glossy leaves emerge after the flowers are finished.
They are popular in borders, rock gardens, and containers, thriving in sun to partial shade and are not particular about soil conditions as long as drainage is good in the winter. In time, they form a strong patch of foliage, multiplying both by bulb offsets and by seeds. Fairly tender to severe winter conditions.
