Capsicum baccatum | Aji Pepper ‘Lemon Drop’
30,000-50,000 Scoville units
Aji Peppers are flowering plants in the nightshade family (Solanaceae) with edible fruits that are commonly made into relishes, or pickled, or ground into a fine powder for use as a spice. Some pepper varieties are not edible and are grown as ornamentals.
Peppers are grown as tender summer annuals in most areas outside their native habitat. Seeds are best propagated indoors or in a greenhouse. It is recommended to transplant outdoors when soil temperatures reach 60 F or warmer. Plants become woody as the growing season progresses. Flowers are typically small with five white petals and pepper fruits come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Mature around 75 days from transplant.
‘Lemon Drop’ Aji pepper is a hot, citrus-flavored pepper and is a popular seasoning pepper in Peru. The peppers ripen to a bright lemon-yellow color, with a dark purple blush on occasion. The flavor is a very clean, slight citrusy heat. The 2′- 3′ tall plants are covered with conical fruits which reach 2″- 3″ in length, with very few seeds. This variety blooms later than most others in the garden.
This is one of our favorite pepper plants to grow due to its structure and fruits!
